Colombia: Exotic fruits boost international trade
The guild pasifloras recently established under the Colombian Federation of passion fruit producers (FECPASS), composed of 270 producers is one of the lines of horticulture fastest growing country in 2015 Agroexpo, which will last until next July 20, this family fruit has its place.
Within the family of Passiflora they stand a group of exotic fruits like badea, gulupa, passion, passion fruit and passion fruit. Precisely, the higher production in the country are passion fruit crops (53%), fruit (29%) and passion fruit (13%) in about 12,000 hectares distributed mainly in the departments of Boyaca, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Huila and Meta.
This is the 2006-2020 export proposition, identified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as it highlights the importance of exports. The economic value generated in the international marketing of these exotic fruits is of great impact for the growing international market.
“For the 2015 performance of 14.6 tons per hectare with a perspective close to export 4,351 tons is expected. So far this year, and 1,669 tons, where gulupa continues to dominate the international market with 80% recorded “said James Rivers, CEO of FECPASS.
During 2015, the first market for this family of fruit, with gulupa as flag, remains Netherlands, and is also the main market for passion fruit, passion fruit juice, fresh passion fruit and passion fruit are Canada, Puerto Rico, Netherlands and Portugal respectively.
