Chile: Subpesca maintains the ban on sardine and anchovy from Valparaiso to Bío
-21 October- Wednesday, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), announced the results of the latest report of the reproductive process of sardine and anchovy in the south central and covering the week of 12 to 18 October. Monitoring conducted by the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), revealed that the ban is maintained from the Valparaiso region to Biobío.
In the case of the Bio Bio Region, an area that has the largest number of engaged in the extraction of small pelagic fishing, a high percentage of female sardine (58%) and anchovy (95%) still active is detected (in step spawning), which exceeds recommended by the Scientific Committee and should not exceed 40% in order to allow extraction tasks. The ban extends to other regions of the precautionary principle given by law.
The representative of the Subpesca in the Bio Bio Region, Lilian Troncoso said that “the figures do not allow to reopen the season and we will be very responsible adjust as recommended by the Scientific Committee on that line. We call the artisanal sector and industry to continue to respect the ban and thus ensure good reproductive process. ”
Meanwhile in the regions of La Araucanía and Los Ríos fishing season sardine and anchovy remains open given that the monitoring by the Ifop realized not exceeded indicators recommended by the Scientific Committee.
