BASF closes acquisition of Bayer’s horticultural seed business
BASF has closed the acquisition of the global horticultural seed business of Bayer, which mainly operates under the trademark Nunhems®, completing the purchase of businesses and assets divested by Bayer as a result of its merger with Monsanto.
Spain is one of the countries where integration has more impact, with four work centers, located in El Ejido (Almeria), Cartagena (Murcia) and Paterna (Valencia). With a prominent role is research and development (R & D), with two centers.
This transaction adds a well-known brand with a very successful business history. The business of vegetable seeds includes 24 crops and around 2,600 varieties. It also includes a robust integrated improvement system consisting of more than 100 unique programs in more than 15 different crops.
The incorporation of the horticultural seed business improves BASF’s global offer for farmers. In addition, it reinforces the BASF seed catalog and complements the recently expanded Agricultural Solutions portfolio. This portfolio now includes seeds and genetic traits of agronomic value, chemical and biological treatments for crop protection, soil management, plant health, pest control and an agricultural digital platform.
With the closing of this operation, BASF concludes the acquisition of an important variety of businesses and assets in which Bayer has divested after its merger with Monsanto. These businesses had combined sales of 2,200 million euros in 2017. The price of acquisitions amounts to a total of 7,600 million euros, subject to certain adjustments at closing.
