Mexico: Begins the meeting of agriculture ministers of the Americas 2015
With the motto “Growing better, produce more, feed everyone,” from 19 to 23 October takes place in the Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, the Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas 2015, organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation Agriculture (IICA) and the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) of Mexico.
This meeting is planned attended by 34 ministers and / or representatives of the countries of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA); The official opening will be led by the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, on Tuesday October 20.
During this event, the secretary José Calzada participate in the technical forum “Towards a competitive productivity, sustainable and inclusive: An Opportunity for Agriculture of the Americas,” in which a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of France presented the initiative “4 x 1000 for handling carbon gases”.
The forum also includes the panel with the participation of the Ministers of Agriculture of Uruguay, Tabaré Aguerre Lombardo, and Brazil, Roberto Rodrigues, and the representative of the Inspection Service Animal and Plant Health in the United States (APHIS, for short English), Jessica Mahalingappa.
It is also expected that the director general of IICA, Mexican Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula, issue recommendations to the technical paper, “A competitive, inclusive and sustainable productivity: opportunity for the Americas.”
Strengthening health to prevent pests
As part of the activities of the Meeting of Ministers of the Americas 2015, it provides that the holder of SAGARPA hold meetings with members of regional bodies in charge of agricultural health, and make bilateral or deputy ministers with their counterparts from countries like USA, France , Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and Canada.
Among the topics to be discussed at continental level in the meeting of Ministers highlights the productivity and sustainability of the rural environment and the challenge of doubling food production in the next 30 years without expanding the existing agricultural frontier.
It will also work to create mechanisms that strengthen protocols and actions in health, to keep countries free of pests and diseases and increase trade in agri-food goods. Hemispheric inclusion and boost productivity will be other core issues that will also be analyzed by experts and authorities in the countries of the IABA.
The results of this meeting, which takes place every two years, will become public policies that contribute to strengthening the rural development and sustainability in the countries. Among those attending also highlight the researcher of the Latin American Center for Rural Development (RIMISP), Julio Berdegué, and Professor of Economics and Social Sciences at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Jose Maria Sumpsi.
American Board of Agriculture (IABA), space for dialogue for agricultural development
The American Board of Agriculture (IABA) is the highest governing body of IICA, which is composed of representatives of 34 member countries and meets every two years.
The JIA is the most important body in the hemisphere to strengthen agricultural development and rural welfare dialogue through international technical cooperation of excellence.
In 2015, Mexico is home to the Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, after ministers and heads of delegations gathered in the last edition held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, chose our country for this event.
IICA is the specialized agency for agriculture of the inter-American system that supports the efforts of its Member States to achieve agricultural development and rural well-being of the Americas.
