EU reinforces its decision to defend the common European project despite of the Brexit
In a joint statement on the outcome of referendum in the UK, made by Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, Mark Rutte, head of the rotating Presidency of the EU Council, and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, it’s included the decision to remain united in the firm defense of the fundamental values of the EU to “promote peace and well-being of its peoples” through a common European project.
As have stated the representatives of the European institutions, “in a free and democratic process, the British people have expressed their desire to leave the European Union. While we regret this decision, we respect it. This is an unprecedented situation but we are united in our response. We will stand firm and defend the fundamental values of the EU to promote peace and well-being of their peoples. The Union of 27 Member States will continue. ”
In the joint communique it states that “the Union is the framework of our common political future. We are bound by history, geography and common interests and develop our cooperation on this basis. Together will address our common challenge of generating growth, increase prosperity and ensure a safe environment for our citizens. The institutions fully play their role in this task. ”
Willingness to speed up procedures
Since the European Union is expected that the Government of the United Kingdom “give effect to this decision of British citizens as soon as possible, in spite of the painful that this process can be. Any delay unnecessarily prolong uncertainty. We have rules to deal with the situation orderly manner. Article 50 of the Maastricht Treaty sets out the procedure to be followed if a member State decides to leave the European Union. We are ready to open negotiations as soon as possible with the United Kingdom in regard to the terms and conditions of its withdrawal from the European Union “.
In that sense it has been clarified that until the end of this negotiation process, “the UK remains a member of the EU, with all the rights and obligations arising from it. In accordance with the treaties that the United Kingdom has ratified the EU law remains fully apply to the United Kingdom, and its territory until no longer a member “.
Also stipulates that, as agreed, the “new engagement of the United Kingdom in the European Union”, adopted at the European Council on 18 and 19 February 2016, will not take effect and ceases to exist. “No there will be no renegotiation,” it said.
The statement concludes that “with regard to the UK, we hope to have him as a close partner of the European Union in the future. We hope that the United Kingdom submit its proposals in this regard. Any agreement concluded with the Kingdom as a third country will have to reflect the interests of both parties and be balanced in terms of rights and obligations. ”
