Mexico is biotechnology applied to agriculture
Technicians, specialists and producers related to the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) may benefit from the course “Biotechnology and its application in agriculture,” which will be available online starting in March with the aim of improving agricultural production the region and strengthen national capacities.
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the CINVESTAV (CINVESTAV) Irapuato are in charge of the technical training of professionals and producers. The course is part of the Technical Cooperation Program Mexico – Caribbean – Central America, an initiative that promotes the strengthening of national capacities in the agricultural sector and is executed with the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) of Mexico. This program addresses the specific needs of the participating countries with short to improve agricultural productivity and generate positive economic impact workouts.
The course lasts eight weeks and consists of six modules. They include an overview of biotechnology and its foundations, soil and microorganisms, genetic and molecular tools and food safety.
The coordinator of the Center for the Promotion of Technical Capabilities and Leadership IICA, Franklin Marin said that this initiative is an effective tool for agricultural, productive and economic development of the participating nations.
“Biotechnology will contribute to the development of agriculture and hence the importance of promoting training courses that strengthen the use of techniques to improve production and help the conservation of biodiversity,” he said.
For its part, the director of CINVESTAV Irapuato, Gabriela Olmedo said that food security requires a multidisciplinary work, since Latin America and the Caribbean face many common problems and in developing a more productive and competitive agriculture.
Planning Director SAGARPA, Aníbal González said that Mexico is committed to boosting cooperation with LAC through classroom courses, online and doctorates to contribute to agricultural development in the region.
