EU cereal harvest will be smaller
The harvest of cereals in the EU expected for the 2015/16 marketing campaign will reach 307 Mt, that while it is 7% lower than last year is still 6% higher than the average of the last five campaigns.
Lower production is expected this year due to lower planted area (-0.8%), probably due to lower market prices, and lower yields (-0.6%) due to adverse weather conditions high temperatures and drought, as in Andalusia and southern Italy, mainly.
In the 2014-15 season, the cereal harvest estimate was 329 Mt, a figure 14% higher than the average of the last five seasons and 8% more than last year, according to the latest report forecasts short term developed by the European Commission.
