Sustainable agriculture and food, keys to curbing climate change
The acting Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, defended on Monday, during COP 25, Spain’s commitment to achieve sustainable agriculture and food, avoiding waste. The minister has advocated productions that guarantee fair compensation for farmers and ranchers to curb climate change.
This has been stated in his speech in the presentation of “The Earth is running out. A menu to become aware ”, organized by Celler de Can Roca, in which the brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca, Goodwill Ambassadors for the UN Development Program, have presented their culinary philosophy and their commitment to the Planet, within the framework of COP 25, which has started today at IFEMA in Madrid.
Millions of people inhabit the Earth, “about 800 million of them are hungry or severely lacking, about 1.6 billion have serious difficulties for their food,” said Luis Planas. The minister has stressed that ensuring food for all citizens of the Earth is an obligation, as stated by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, in a context of climate change
“That is a great task that needs sustainable agriculture, that respects the environment, water, soil, air, biodiversity and landscape, that manages to curb climate change,” added the minister. Luis Planas has advocated a “healthy” food production, tasty and that can be obtained at a reasonable price, remunerating the farmer fairly, but that is also accessible to the citizen.
“You have to know how to choose what we eat, in what quantity – to avoid food waste – and also cook it properly,” said the minister.
