These initiatives of the European Commission (EC) will be co-financed with a budget of 200 million euros, of which 118 will go to campaigns for high-growth countries such as Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico and the United States, while the rest will go to promote products within the territory of the EU.

The call is open to organizations and professional associations, as well as to groups of producers and agri-food groups responsible for promotional activities, who must submit their proposals before April 16. Chafea, the EU executive agency for consumers, health, agriculture and food, will organize an information day on this initiative in Brussels on January 30, which will be open to all potential beneficiaries to help them better prepare their proposals.

The Commission will be responsible for evaluating them and will announce the beneficiaries in the fall.

The causes

These grants are one of the measures that the Member States demanded from the EU to mitigate the effects of the tariffs imposed by the US on Europe since last October. The US president, Donald Trump, boosted tariffs on European products, which can amount to up to 7.5 billion dollars, legitimized by a ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) due to illegal community aid to its aeronautical giant Airbus.

Some of the products affected by the tariffs, which tax the products with an extra tax of 25%, are Spanish oil and cheeses, as well as wine and alcoholic beverages, dairy products, olives, pork, some sweets, processed fruit and citrus.
