The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, Isabel García Tejerina has highlighted the progress made by the Spanish wine sector, “which today is more competitive, transparent and sustainable”. García Tejerina, who made these statements during the presentation, on November 14th, of the Promotion Campaign “Marida mejor tu vida con vino”, by the Spanish Wine Interprofessional (OIVE), has also highlighted the world leadership of our country in planted area of vineyard.

For the minister, the Spanish wine sector has gained greater transparency, following the implementation, by the Ministry, of a wine market information system on mandatory monthly declarations of wineries, INFOVI, and a register of operators, the REOVI. “It is also more sustainable, she said, thanks to the commitment of companies with the Wineries for Climate Protection Certificate (WfCP), which places some of them in the forefront of the fight against climate change”.

Strategic value

García Tejerina has also highlighted the strategic nature of the wine sector in Spain, which in addition to having the largest planted area of vineyards in the world, with nearly one million hectares, has a marked socioeconomic component, as the cooperatives, with 200,000 viticultural partners, group almost 60% of the planted area.

It has also pondered the role of the industrial sector, modern and powerful, made up of more than 4,000 companies, whose net product sales figure is higher than 5,800 million euros, and its exporting vocation, achieving records every year in value. Thus, the minister explained, in the first eleven months of the 2016-2017 campaign, 2,680 million euros were achieved, almost 4% more than in the same period of the previous campaign.

Some foreign markets in which wines with Denominations of Origin stand out, of which 90 Denominations have already been registered in the European Union, to which must be added 41 Protected Geographical Indications.

In promoting these advances, García Tejerina has highlighted the importance of the National Support Program, established by the Government through MAPAMA for the period 2014/2018, which has an expected annual allocation of more than 210 million euros per year, and allows the restructuring and reconversion of the vineyard, and the application of innovation, promotion and investment measures.

Within the framework of the National Support Program, 1,627 projects have been approved, with 845 million euros of investment, which has increased the competitiveness of the industries

“Must be emphasized, has signaled the minister, the Programs of Promotion in Third Countries, of which already have executed 5.269 since 2009, with an investment of more than 600 million euros, which have led to a better knowledge of our wines, being a key factor to improve the internationalization of companies”. Some results that have led the minister to affirm that “our wine is fashionable, it is recommended in the most prestigious specialized guides and triumphs in the great world competitions”.
